Trinity Lutheran Church: A Legacy of Faith and Community
WACO, TX – Established in 1945, Trinity Lutheran Church arose from the need for an additional Lutheran congregation in the Waco area, as St. Mark Lutheran could no longer accommodate the growing number of worshippers.
The church's first location was at 26th Street and Morrow Avenue. In the absence of a dedicated building, the congregation held Sunday services at the Seventh-day Adventist Church on 13th Street and Jefferson Avenue, which graciously offered its facilities.
In 1947, the community took a significant step toward permanence by purchasing a surplus Army chapel in Brownwood, Texas, for $1,000. After transporting the structure to Waco in four sections and completing renovations, the first service was held on May 2, 1948.
Seeking further growth, in 1959, Trinity began exploring options for expansion. A new site was selected at Bosque Boulevard and Fish Pond Drive. The final service held at the Morrow Avenue location occurred on July 14, 1963, at 8:30 AM, followed by a special dedication of the new sanctuary at 3:30 PM.
Trinity has played a vital role in nurturing the growth of other Lutheran congregations. In 1955, the church collaborated with St. Mark Lutheran to establish St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead, aiding 11 families in transferring their membership. In 1978, land was donated for the formation of Peace Lutheran Church in Hewitt, where 28 adults were released to join. More recently, in 2021, members from Trinity were led to form a new mission church, The Gathering, in Robinson.
Throughout the 1970s, Trinity's choir, directed by David Angerman, thrived, presenting acclaimed musicals like The Story-Telling Man and The Witness, with performances extending beyond Trinity to other Lutheran churches across Texas.
In 1974, the Braille Ministry previously operating at Trinity in Riesel relocated to the Waco location, continuing to produce Braille Material on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
A pivotal moment in the church’s history occurred in 1979 when women were finally granted the right to vote in congregational matters and hold specific leadership positions.
In 1953, Trinity established a school that began with kindergarten and expanded to eighth grade, operating for an impressive 52 years before closing in 2005. Trinity member, Ruth Pick taught kindergarten there starting in 1958, and many Waco residents fondly remember her influence up until her retirement in 1987.
In 2008, Trinity relocated to its current campus at Badger Ranch, marking the next phase of its journey. Under the leadership of Interim Pastor Rev. Norm Steinke and through the dedication and hard work of its members, the church's building project was successfully completed, paving the way for the move to the new campus.
Over its 81 years, Trinity Lutheran Church has been guided by seven pastors and has served as a spiritual home for generations of families—conducting baptisms, confirmations, weddings, and funerals. Trinity has had 3 different locations. As we look to the future, we anticipate the continued leadership and faith of new generations embracing the legacy of this cherished church.
Trinity Lutheran Church offers a wide variety of meaningful opportunities to connect, grow, and serve. Members can get involved through ministries such as LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League), JOY Group, Small Groups, Men’s Ministry, Youth Groups, Senior Ministries, Life Groups, and Music Ministry.
Hands-on service opportunities include Braille ministry, quilting, Vacation Bible School (VBS), Trunk or Treat, Journey to Bethlehem, and our annual Easter Egg Hunt, among many other ministries and events. These opportunities provide meaningful ways for people of all ages to serve, connect, and make a lasting impact in our community.
Trinity is blessed to offer two distinct worship services designed to meet the diverse needs and preferences of our congregation and community. Both services share the same biblical message and commitment to spiritual growth, providing meaningful opportunities for worship in different styles.
As Trinity Lutheran Church celebrates more than eight decades of ministry, it remains firmly rooted in its mission of sharing Christ’s love through worship, education, fellowship, and service. Built on a rich heritage of faith and strengthened by generations of dedicated members, Trinity continues to be a place where lives are transformed, families are nurtured, and the community is served. With gratitude for the past and confidence in God’s guidance for the future, Trinity Lutheran Church looks forward to continuing its legacy of faith for generations to come.
